I recently moved further away from my work in Scarborough and in to the downtown core of Toronto. Where I used to live was a short 15 Minute drive on semi busy streets. Where I am now it is about 1:15 minutes but mostly because the traffic is so congested. I would not be able to deal with all the stresses of Toronto driving at the early hours I know have to get up at in time for work. I have since been taking the subway to work which can be quite uncomfortable at times but allows me too get absorbed in a book, listen to music or just plan and reflect. All because I don’t have to pay attention to my transportation. I simply stand or sit and wait till I arrive, and I can find many things to occupy this spare time.
Here are a list of things i’ve done or seen people do in order to make the ride more enjoyable.
Music -Is a must it drowns out strangers conversations and allows for a much more enjoyable journey. It also allows a lot of time to listen to new music, or enjoy old music.
Soduko - I see lots of people doing these number puzzles each morning.
Breakfast - My trips pretty long so some times I will pack an easy breakfast and eat some muffins and fruit…etc Mostly so I can sleep more before getting on the subway.
Electronics - Their are all sorts of dvd / game / video devices that can keep people amused for hours.
Books - I have been reading like a madman lately as I personally find it helps the time fly and absorbs me completely. It’s also a good place to study or learn about required or interesting things.
Coffee - A travel mug can allows you to take coffee with you and also allows for more sleep beforehand.
Free newspapers - Now, 24hrs…etc there is a selection of free daily newspapers to help pass the time and they can often be found on the subway if you’ve forgotten your book.
Sleeping - I personally can’t do this but I often see people sleeping on the subway.
Friends/coworkers - There is bound to be someone you know or work with that is sharing at least part of your commute and a friendly conversation definitely helps pass the time.
Characters - You will see every different type of person if you ride a Toronto subway long enough. While still respecting people and thier rights you can enjoy the “scenery” of some of the unique and interesting ideas, styles and trends with both amusement and horror.
Hopefully this gives you a couple of ideas when your on the subway next… or at least makes you think differently when choosing to go by car or transport.Especially with the ever rising price of gas.
Have any activities that you find helps on public transport…? leave them in a comment.
